What To Do When No One Wants To

Have you ever been assigned a project solely because no one else wanted to deal with it or knew how to handle it? For instance, you get an email from your leadership saying there’s a new initiative and they need someone to head it up. What now?

When you’re in a situation like this, you have two options: pass the project to someone else or face it head on. This is exactly the situation Michelle Kelly found herself in when her company (prior to Advoco) decided to start using EAM software.

“It started with a box of software that nobody knew what to do with,” explains Michelle. “They walked into my office, sat it on my desk and said, ‘Corporate says we have to use this, figure it out.’” Have you ever found yourself in this “figure it out” predicament?

When you challenge yourself to take on a project that others are shying away from, you have the chance to develop a new skill, and people will take notice.

“Because that box was put on my desk, I had to figure out asset management,” says Michelle. “I learned what an asset really was and what it meant to a company. EAM allowed me to see that even though we were managing assets every day, without an EAM software, we weren’t able to prove we were doing it. I enjoyed that EAM gave me that ability to prove my work.”

Michelle was able to harness the power of a tool to drive productivity, instead of it just being a byproduct of something she “had to do.” She gained a new skill that later turned into her career.

When you’re in a situation like Michelle, dive in head first. Be the person to take the project on. You might be surprised where that project will take you.

Until next time…We are Advoco, make every minute count.

About Michelle: It’s hard to find someone that doesn’t like Michelle – she’s easy to talk to, she’s a wealth of knowledge about EAM, she’s relatable, and to top it all off, she’s fun to be around! Her Infor EAM life started at a university that used the product to manage facilities. She has since built up a support call center team within Advoco and now manages our entire southeast delivery team. When Michelle isn’t helping our customers, you can find her in her garden preparing vegetables for canning or touring the Upstate on her motorcycle! Have a question for Michelle? Send her an email!
