Success in your workplace can come from many areas, including from relationships—relationships with your coworkers, your supervisors, and your clients. “Success comes from being able to get along with a wide variety of people at different levels in a business,” explains Paul Cowley, a partner at Advoco.
When your team is working together in harmony towards a common goal, not only is the work getting completed more efficiently, but also the people are probably enjoying it more too!
“We aim to run a company where we’re all friendly and there’s no friction between people, teams, and groups,” explains Paul. “And that’s not as normal as you might think. Some companies try to infuse friction and competitiveness, but that’s not in our nature. We try to keep any tension out, and it is something you have to continually work at doing.”
If you want to have a successful company, you must first commit to the strength of interpersonal connections within the company. It’s important to lead by example, fostering the types of relationships that will help your organization grow. Take the initiative to help build the culture at your company—invite someone to lunch, have a quick conversation over morning coffee, or take the time to sit down in someone’s office and ask them how their family is doing.
By learning to maneuver relationships—either keeping them on a positive track or steering them back on course if they’ve gone astray—you are building a valuable skill set that will make your work environment more enjoyable for everyone.
Aristotle once famously said, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” and we couldn’t agree more! Everyone is better when we work together.
