Leaders are Readers

Reading books is a big part of our culture at Advoco. Every quarter, our leadership team chooses a book to read. We often give books as gifts to each other. It’s like an unofficial company book club – facilitating discussion and giving people the chance to learn together.
At the end of last year, one of my leaders challenged me to read more books, listen to more podcasts, and attend a conference in my field. I would be lying if I said I didn’t roll my eyes at the reading part. I don’t love reading like he does, but I trusted his encouragement to accept the challenge.
And he was right – I learned so much.
From Gary Vaynerchuck, I’ve learned about how gratitude can be an awesome motivator. We have one life so why not make the best of it? Now, I’m trying to start with thank you in conversations.
From Simon Sinek, I’ve learned about how true leaders and successful organizations put others above themselves. People thrive in environments where they feel safe, respected, and cherished. Doing what’s right is the most important thing.
From Seth Godin, I learned how much mass we are creating, how we need to take one stand, and how we should focus on the outliers. Empathy and grit are essential no matter what field you’re in. Now, I’m focused more on being important, not popular.
If you don’t want to become complacent, you have to put yourself in the right arena. By reading and listening, you can learn and grow.
It sounds cheesy but it’s a phrase we like to use a lot: leaders are readers. What are you doing to be a better leader?
Until next time…we are Advoco, make every minute count.
