Expect a Lot, Get a Lot

I always enjoy a good conversation, but I especially enjoy discussing topics on keys to success, how people define success, and how I can get better. Why do some individuals and companies rarely achieve their goals, while others consistently over-achieve? Why do some have happy, fulfilling lives, while others do not? What makes a great leader? What does success mean? These questions make me think.

There are plentiful answers to these questions in the multitude of books and articles out there. You may have noticed in previous posts that we are big believers in reading at Advoco. There is no silver bullet solution, but educating yourself on different experiences and points of view is critical to finding answers.

For me, the answer is not complicated and is a little more personal. It’s been nearly 30 years since my Dad said the words, “If you expect a lot, you’ll get a lot.” My dad gave me a lot of advice over the years, but this simple comment has stuck with me.

I believe you should live your life every day with this expectation. With this attitude, you will be able to set the pace for the pack and be the leader you want to be – for your colleagues, your friends, your family.

If you expect to be average, you will be average. If you expect to be excellent, you will be excellent. If for some reason you fall a little short of excellent, you can still be great.

I can still hear that deep voice talking to me – “If you expect a lot, you’ll get a lot.” At Advoco, we always Expect Success. My dad also lived by this mentality, and so do I.
