Send a Note

In an age of texting, emails, and online communication, we’re moving away from one of my favorite things – the handwritten note.

Maybe it’s because my parents always made me write thank you notes after holidays and birthdays or because of my love affair with stationary stores, but handwritten notes hold a special place in my heart.

For me, there is something really great about taking pen to paper, I’d go as far as to say it’s cathartic. Putting your thoughts and feelings into the universe and sharing them with other people, there’s true joy in that. But I think people are forgetting how powerful a handwritten note can be.

Notes can be sent for small things – saying thanks for helping with a project; or for big things – expressing condolences after the loss of a loved one. They can be written for inconsequential things – just thinking of you; or they can be for monumental things – congratulations on the new job. Whatever the reason for writing the note, one thing is certain, the person receiving the note will feel loved, valued, and important to you.

Taking the time to send a note shows that you care and that you are invested in the person receiving the note. In the business world, sending a handwritten note after an interview can give you an edge over another candidate. It can show a teammate that you are proud to work with them and thankful they are part of your organization. In your personal life, sending a note shows you’re thinking of someone, no matter how far away they might be.

I’m a millennial, so don’t get me wrong, I love Facebook and Instagram and I keep my phone glued to my hip. But when I really want to share how I’m feeling, I’m sending a note the good old-fashioned way.
