We Hire You to Retire You

There is a billboard for a trucking company that I pass every morning on my way to work.

For a while, I didn’t pay much attention to it, but then one day the billboard answered a question that I had been asked the day before…Why is it important to take your hiring process so seriously?

The billboard was blaringly loud: “We hire you to retire you.”

When your organization is growing, it is critical to build the right team. It’s okay to be particular in the hiring process because you want to hire for the long term. You want to invest in a team member who is going to be invested in you.

Does that mean that you should believe every person hired on your team will be with you until they retire? Yes, absolutely.

Of course, some people will move on and try other things. But when you hire someone, you should be hiring them because you want that person to be a part of your team until they retire.

You don’t marry on a whim, so why hire on a whim? Shouldn’t you want to find a long-term team member?

When you get the right team in place, your organization will thrive. Imagine having a team filled with veterans who have been with your organization for 5, 15, 25 years. And these veterans are the ones teaching the next generation of team members – building a culture of longevity and commitment.

If your hiring process is extensive, that’s a great thing! At Advoco, we’ve designed it to be that way. As tough as it is at times for both parties, it’s worth every minute to us.
