Board With Trust

In the past year, I’ve been on about 20 trips that involved a plane. One day while boarding, I started thinking about the amount of trust that goes into flying on a plane.

You are 35,000 feet above ground surrounded by 200 strangers. But for some reason, there’s an atmosphere of trust surrounding the whole process.

Most of us trust the pilot to navigate and get us safely to our destination. You trust the passengers next to you to be respectful. You trust the crew to provide you with safety instructions in case of an emergency. You trust someone to help you get your bag in the overhead bin if you are struggling to do it alone while holding coffee…purely hypothetical, of course.

Ironically, most of this trust exists around relationships with people you’ve never met before and will likely never see again.

Yet, we struggle to trust people we know.

How does this make sense?

Trust should be the foundation of everything we do. The basis of our teams at work for starters. What do you have to lose by trusting others and trusting the process? I would argue a lot less than what you can gain.

Without trust, you will be skeptical to take risks, to speak up, to be vulnerable. It feels awkward at first, but the more comfortable you are doing those things, the better off you will be. Things may fail or break, but it’ll be a good learning lesson in the process.

Abandon your pride and fear, and let’s start trusting.

The next time you’re faced with a situation where you are feeling doubtful, or vulnerable, or scared, practice a little trust. We can go farther together than we ever can alone.

When you start with trust, think of the places you can go.
