More Than Just A Job

There is a saying in the HR world that finding people is easy, recruiting talent is hard.

Today’s marketplace is as competitive as ever with companies all wanting to hire their next superstar. When you do finally discover that four-leaf clover, they usually have a plethora of career options whether it be staying at their current job or having multiple offers to choose from.

Candidates are looking for more than just a job. They want a lifestyle. This includes not only their personal life but the type of work they do, where they do that work, and how the company they work for can fit in with their desire to make the world a better place.

In a recent survey by LinkedIn, 50% of candidates stated they would take a pay cut for work that matches their own values. They want to work for companies that are socially responsible and value a positive impact on society. This is a trend we see during our hiring process at Advoco.

By my rough estimate, at least 75% of candidates mention some aspect of community service in their interviews. They will say things like, I saw on your website that you are involved with the community, and I want to do more than just work for a paycheck. They talk about wanting to have a positive impact in the communities where they work.

To me, this is a really exciting trend to see. After all, giving back is what life is all about. I love working for a company that values this.

Today’s candidates are looking for more than just a job. So, what can we do to foster this desire?

As we head into the holiday season, I encourage you to think about what you can be doing at your organization to support the growing need to be part of something bigger and make the world a better place. Can you host a food drive? Or, maybe you can spare an hour a month to organize a group to volunteer at a local non-profit.

Encourage your team to get involved and give back to the community. You can help fill the desire to have a more than just a job, but a career that aligns with their personal values.

Until next time…we are Advoco, make every minute count.
