Effort is a Choice

Our lives are increasingly busy, and it seems we are always trying to jam more things into our day. This hectic schedule can leave us tired and uninspired. Do you ever find yourself just going through the motions? I know it has happened to me before.

I try to workout regularly, but there are days when I find myself physically at the gym, but mentally elsewhere. This results in me going through the motions, but not giving my best effort.

I was having one of those days when I saw a friend wearing a shirt that said, “Effort is a choice.” That was an inspiring statement to read, and it really stuck with me.

This “effort is a choice” mantra is similar to another phrase I heard, “Every chip is a choice.”

I heard this while listening to a podcast about human willpower. The podcaster was explaining that we have the tendency to do things without realizing the power of choice we have. For example, we tear open a bag of potato chips and eat until they’re gone.

That’s where “every chip is a choice” comes in. We have the power to stop eating after one chip, but we choose to eat more. But do you think about the choice you’re making? I would guess not.

Just like we can go on autopilot with our salty snacks, we can do the same thing with projects, exercising, or even our relationships. There is no substitute for hard work, and giving your all goes a long way towards achieving your desired results.

If effort is a choice, let’s all make the conscious decision to put in the effort!
