What Motivates You?

While running one morning with my dog, Denny, I was feeling particularly motivated. I woke up early, meaning I went to bed early, got ready to run, got Denny ready to run, left my house (without procrastinating), and completed a good run. I did all of this because I was motivated to improve myself.

But about half way through my run I started thinking about my dog.

Denny is one of the three dogs that my family has adopted. She has the capability to run much faster than myself. There is no speed that I have ever run that could keep up with her when she is motivated. She is capable of amazing athletic feats that are impossible for me to accomplish. So why was I pulling her this morning? Why wasn’t she pulling me?

Obviously, this is a complex question to answer, but let me tell you what happened a little further into our run. That morning, just like every time we run, when we turned onto the final stretch back to my house Denny instantly sped up. She knows where we are going, she knows how to get there, and she is motivated to get home.

When we are running away from my house, she does not know where we are going, and she is just enjoying being outside. But the closer we get to the end, the more motivated she is to speed up. When we can see my house, she is pulling me, and I am holding on for dear life. She is finally properly motivated.

So, let me ask, what motivates you?

As human beings we can accomplish great things when properly motivated. We have built the Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, the Golden Gate Bridge, and we have gone to the Moon.

The next time you want to accomplish something great, maybe rollout Infor EAM or improve your maintenance practices, think about what will motivate you and your team. This could be the difference between success and failure.
