What Are You Interviewing For

Recently, I walked into the office dressed in a blazer and jokingly got asked, “Do you have an interview today?”

If you’ve ever been to the Advoco office, you know that we have a business casual dress code, so it was fairly out of the ordinary that I was wearing a blazer. And while I didn’t have an interview myself, I was conducting an interview for a potential new hire.

When I was getting dressed the next morning, I looked at the blazer from the previous day. I thought to myself, “What am I interviewing for today?”

There’s an adage that goes, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you already have.” But I think we should expand this notion to be, “Dress and work for the job you want, not the job you already have.”

There is certainly something to be said for how we present ourselves. But what happens once we already have the job, once the project has already started? Just because you landed the job or project, doesn’t mean it is guaranteed forever.

We need to let our work speak for us, just like our clothing can speak for us.

What are you doing to keep the job? Are you invested and staying engaged? Every day is an interview, so put your best foot forward!

When you get dressed on Monday, ask yourself, what job am I interviewing for today? Then, challenge yourself not only to dress the part, but also, to work the part!

Until next time…we are Advoco, make every minute count.
