Are You Inspiring Others

This week a quote has been stuck in my head. “The most important thing to do is to try and inspire people so they can be great in whatever they want to do.”

These are the words of the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant. As I begin to think about the immense tragedy surrounding the helicopter crash that took the life of Bryant, his daughter, and seven other meaningful and important lives, I am reminded of the legacy that Kobe left behind.

You see, Bryant was up to something more important than the game he played. Sure, we remember his historic basketball career. We remember the moments that defined him as a player such as hitting clutch game winners, representing the United States, winning league MVPs, etc. However, Bryant was leading a more important life beyond the sport he played. He recognized the platform he had, and he was using it to inspire people near and far. It is through this that his legacy is truly defined.

Bryant focused on his family. He made time for the ones he loved. He fought for equality and invested in organization such as the WNBA and Women’s National Soccer Team. He took a stand for what was important to him. His commitment to those beliefs leaves us remembering the remarkable human he was.

Tragedy brings self-reflection for most. As I reflect on this, I ask myself, “Am I inspiring people?” Am I answering the call clearly defined by Bryant’s words and actions? If I’m being honest, the answer is probably “not enough.”

I wonder where my focus is and should be. Am I investing my time in a meaningful manner? Am I leading in a way that inspires others? Where is my identity found? Am I doing enough? Am I grounded in my beliefs?

I don’t have all the answers, nor do I think there is one “right” way to inspire people. I do, however, think there are some ways to get on the right track. Focus on the community around you. Not sure what that is? Start with your family and friends. You’ll be surprised just how far your community will reach.

You don’t have to be a millionaire to have a platform to inspire. Find meaning where you are, invest in others, give generously, do the right thing. Let’s make a difference and live inspiring lives.
