Are You a Victim of Stinking Thinking?

We all know this feeling: after talking with a co-worker, a relative, or a friend, you feel like the ground underneath you is falling.

You had a plan that you thought would work. You had it all figured out. Then, you either intentionally sought out feedback or someone came to you with some unsolicited advice.

The conversation started off fine. But with the precision of a surgeon, with what would normally be an innocuous statement, all your confidence was gone in a flash.

It could have been something like, “Don’t you know so and so will never go for that,” or maybe, “What’s the point.” Or worse yet, “You aren’t good enough to pull that off…”

If this scenario rings true, then you have been a victim of stinking thinking! The conversation weighs you down and makes you less confident than before.

So, what can you do if this happens to you? The first thing is that you can combat the stinking thinker! Use positivity, focusing on facts and not emotions. You can also try to avoid the stinking thinker altogether. If you know someone is going to bring you down, you can choose to not engage with that person.

Another route, and the one I prefer, is to over prepare. If you have an answer for every challenge to your project/plan, you can have confidence in yourself and your knowledge.

Whatever you do, don’t let the stinking thinker get you down! Pursue your plans and prove those stinking thinkers wrong.
