Bring Out the Greatness of Others

“Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. We are all born to help each other. No matter how difficult it is…life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.”
As you know, I love quotes that get me thinking, and this proverb does just that.
Great leaders are great not because they have accumulated power and influence, but because they have the ability to bring out greatness in others. In every situation they look for the opportunity to let someone else shine and be the hero. They aren’t eating their own fruit but instead, trying to grow fruit so others may eat.
So how can you do that?
Let your employees or coworker give the big presentation; let them run the meeting with the client; let them bask in the glory while you beam in the background. Of course, you need to provide adequate scaffolding to ensure their safety during this process and be ready to jump in and bail them out if need be. However, if you properly prepare them and help them anticipate where the challenges may come from, you may be surprised at how satisfying it is when they knock it out of the park.
Until next time…we are Advoco, make every minute count.
