Everyone Does Not Agree with Me

During this year with the pandemic, the election, and the murder hornets I found out something I did not realize before: everyone does not agree with me.

I always assumed, at least in my circle of family and friends, that everyone has mostly the same values and world view. With the events of 2020, I have realized that people close to me may not have my world view. I loosely follow social media and I see friends and relatives making posts that surprise me and directly conflict with my social and political belief system.

Some do not like my choice in presidential candidates, some disagree with me on how to handle masks. I think everyone agrees that murder hornets are bad, but probably disagrees on how to get rid of them.

The other thing I realized is that it does not matter. These are my neighbors, friends, and family. Red and Blue does not change that. I have never had a President help me move, or loan me a tool I need, or be there to listen when I have a tough day. Friends do that. Friends that vote my way and friends that do not.

Politicians and media companies profit from making us believe that we dislike each other. The fact is that we mostly do not. We all want security and the best life possible for our friends and community. We sometimes disagree on how to achieve or maintain that.

Please remember that the people that you love are still the same people that you loved in 2019. Yard signs and bumper stickers do not change that. Do not let Facebook and Twitter build walls between us. If you want to know how someone feels about politics, learn about it over dinner, not in a chat room. You may find that we are all just people trying to navigate trying times.
