Everyone Is A Potential Reference

We’ve all been there before – applying for a new position and they ask us to list our references. But what happens when you don’t have references in the field you are applying for a position in?
My daughter was recently in this situation. She was applying for a new job in a different field and was concerned that she did not have references for the exact work she was applying for.
But here is the important part: references are based on the work you do and your character, not the field you work in. In every project, with every customer, during every interaction, you should be doing your best. You never know who could be a potential reference!
Every person you come into contact with, whether it’s your teammate, your boss, or your child’s friend’s parent, can serve as a potential reference for your next position. This means you should always be operating at your best, both in your professional and personal life.
No matter how repetitive, outside your scope, or seemingly menial a task might be, attack it with vigor! Give the project everything you’ve got and do it to the best of your ability. You don’t know who’s watching, and who might be a reference down the road.
This one is short and to the point, but I can’t stress it enough everyone is a potential reference.
Until next time…we are Advoco, make every minute count.
