Focus on a Smile

There is a quote from Mother Teresa, "Peace begins with a smile. Smile five times a day at someone you don't really want to smile at."

In a pre-COVID world, this was straightforward. Whether at work, running to the supermarket, or maybe even at home, we interact with folks we might not necessarily want to smile at. But when you smile, it’s the first step to brightening your mood, and maybe turning the situation around.

There’s actually quite a bit of science behind smiling. I won’t go into the studies, neural signals, and endorphins, but put simply: when our brain feels happy, we smile and when we smile, our brain feels happier. It’s a circular reaction.

But what about now in a world of masks and virtual meetings? We’ve lost that face to face time and we’re being pulled in a million different directions.

Sometimes I find myself sitting on a video conference call and my mind wanders to the email that pings, the doorbell behind me that rings, or maybe even my pet getting into trouble. It’s easy to get distracted when we aren’t in the confines of a conference room.

So, what should we do?

I think we should remember the Mother Teresa quote.

When we feel our mind (and eyes) wondering during a video call, let’s bring it back to a smile! Focus on where you are and smile at the camera and focus on the faces on the other side of your screen. This intentional smile will brighten your mood, and the mood of those on the call. Instead of a screen full of intense stares, you’ll find a screen full of joy staring back.
