Grace and Attitude Always Go a Long Way

In 2020, I moved back to South Carolina from San Francisco. To get me excited for the move, one of the things I promised myself was an apartment in downtown Greenville. An apartment where I could walk to the coffee shops and cocktail bars like in San Francisco, but one that I could afford to live in by myself. A place I could decorate and style the way I wanted with amenities that I could not afford while living in California.
Needless to say, the choice of an apartment was important to me.
If you’ve ever looked for an apartment, maybe you know the drill. You arrive to your booked appointment, one that they can’t seem to find a record of. You are asked questions you aren’t prepared to answer but they ask in a way that makes it feel like you should know. Then to top it off, you are shown rooms and areas that have not been cleaned and smell funny. You ask yourself, do they even want me to live here?
Then came along Ben.
Ben is a property manager who defied these norms.
He was different right off the bat. I had not even booked an appointment at this particular apartment complex because I was told they did not do shorter term leases. And after a day of underwhelming experiences, I did not want to go in. But my boyfriend convinced me that we should check it out anyway, because initially it was on the top of my list.
Ben greeted us, “No worries, Come on in!”
Ben was no nonsense unlike the others. I didn’t feel like he was trying to sell me a scam but rather he was providing me information about apartment living, explaining different information to me. He was gracious, kind, and flexible.
The kindness from Ben as a property manager continued throughout my experience of living there. He was helpful every step of the way. Recently, I needed to let the property office know of changes on my end. I left the note at my door and the email unanswered in the midst of the busyness going on in life. Oops. Once again comes Ben – happy to help with no repercussions for me missing the deadline.
Since moving in, I have convinced 3 other people to move into this apartment complex. Of course, there’s many other things about it that I love, but a lot has to do with the customer service and the first impression that Ben gave me.
When something is important to you, oh how far kindness goes.
When something is important to you, oh how much the extra steps matter.
When something is important to you, oh how much the positive attitude helps.
The problem is – a lot of times we don’t know when something is important to someone. Ben did not know the experiences of that day touring apartments. And really – it shouldn’t matter the situation; we should always act like this.
What I’m trying to say is be kinder, give more grace, and help others when you can. Be more like Ben.
