Is This Success?

I was scrolling mindlessly through social media recently, when a picture of a billboard caught my eye. It read, “It’s amazing what can happen when you aren’t attached to the outcome.”
This led me to thinking about what a strange year it has been, how life changes in a moment’s notice, and how so often we are hyper focused on a single outcome that we forget to pay attention to how we achieve it, what we achieve along the way, or to the other possibilities that exist.
Take success as an example. We all wish to become successful in one way or another. However, we frequently set ourselves up for failure, unintentionally of course. Often we compare our own success to those around us, those in the same field, those that are the same age, the same gender, etc. Shouldn’t our success be defined by what we overcome and achieve along the way, not just a singular outcome?
We forget that life is fluid. Goals and measures of success change as we mature and gain experiences and knowledge, or as we are affected by external forces out of our control. We often focus on the negative and sometimes feel like a failure because we have yet to achieve the first outcome we desired or have failed to achieve it when those around us have.
I’m not a gambler, but I would be willing to bet that no one predicted what 2020 would bring and we all have unfulfilled New Year’s resolutions. However, I’m sure we have still made steps toward reaching our goals, albeit they were made much differently than how we may have planned at the beginning of the year.
So, take a moment and celebrate your resiliency and your ability to adapt to whatever life throws at you! 2020 was a wild ride, but we’re making it!
Until next time…we are Advoco, make every minute count.
