It's Your Turn to Lead

I just started, I can’t lead anyone. I can’t even lead myself to the bathroom because I just got here!
I remember having this thought almost every time I started a new job or a new role during my career. Many times I knew I was being hired to “lead” something but I never felt comfortable just jumping in and leading. Who was I to say anything when I have only been here 5 minutes?!
But that’s because I didn’t really know what leading was all about. Leading is a million different things. Being a great leader is figuring out which one of those million things you should be doing at that moment. Can you encourage your teammates? Can you be open and transparent with them from day 1? Can you show them that you work hard? Can you lead with trust? If you can do that, then you can lead!
Early in your career, you won’t have all the answers. You won’t be the subject matter expert. You won’t be the wise, crafty veteran that has been through the wringer and learned from the bumps and bruises along the way. But the good news is, you don’t have to be. You can lead by being a positive teammate. You can lead by encouraging others when they are having a rough day. You can lead just by being you!
So what are you waiting for? It’s your turn to lead!
