Leadership Branches, Leaves, and Acorns

They say a-Minute inspiration can come from anywhere – and that rings true for this one!
I was sitting in a deer stand, before the sun came up, just listening to the sounds of nature.
I heard a ping, pop, crunch, coming down around me. It sounded almost like heavy rain drops hitting the leaves. But then I realized it was actually acorns dropping from the trees.
I listened more closely. I could actually hear the descent as they began to drop. I continued to listen, and realized that some weren’t hitting the ground. Why was this happening?
And then it hit me – the woods were filled with branches still heavy with leaves that were catching the acorns on their way down. Some acorns slowed down as they hit the leaves, and hit later than expected, while others never hit the ground at all. It was an odd phenomenon to watch and consider.
As I sat and pondered it, I noticed the correlation between those tree limbs and leadership.
To build trust in your teams, you should always be that safety net, like the leaves on these tree branches. In order to do that, you have to really listen – looking out to hear the release and potential fall. Sometimes our employees make mistakes, sometimes they are carrying a heavy burden we may not know about, but are you really stopping and listening?
Are you reaching out your “leadership arms” to slow their descent to create a softer landing, or maybe catch them completely before they hit the ground?
Stop, be still, and listen. If you listen closely, you can hear the descent. So, stretch out your branches and be in the way!
Ultimately, if you do your part, that little acorn that you helped reach the ground without destruction may grow into a mighty oak tree.
Until next time…we are Advoco, make every minute count.
