Pick Up The Phone

In our increasingly digital age, it’s often times easier to fire off a text or shoot a quick email. This has never been more true than during the pandemic. But I’m a firm believer in the power of picking up the phone. Sometimes a simple phone conversation and asking the right questions makes all the difference!

I came across a story on LinkedIn that really illustrates this belief.

The original poster explained that his daughter is getting married this summer and planning a wedding during the uncertainty of COVID has been a challenge.

As the father of the bride, his wedding job was to secure the caterer for the big day. With a list about the desired menu, headcount, date, and venue in hand, he reached out to three catering companies for a quote.

The first company gave an estimate, and the second gave an estimate that was double what the first company was asking.

And then, much like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the third company was just right. The third company didn’t just send an email with an estimate, they called and asked questions – about the budget, set up, and a tasting of their food. Only a few minutes into the conversation with this third company, he had mentally given them his business. The third company made it clear they were professionals with a tried and true process. By following their process, the company could provide the best experience to potential customers.

A good process makes all the difference, and sometimes, a phone call is the only way to explain that process!

In every relationship, be it work or personal, we need to build rapport and ease people’s fears and the uncertainty of their journey, no matter if it’s a business project or planning a wedding! While texts and emails are great for quick communication, there is no replacement for picking up the phone and having a conversation.

Here’s hoping you talk so much on your cell phone tomorrow that your battery dies.
