Protect or Prepare?

Let me ask you a question. When it comes to your life, which approach do you take – do you protect or prepare?

Do you keep yourself in a bubble so you can be protected from the bumps in the road? Or do you pack yourself a bag with things that might be helpful, so you can be prepared for what might come your way?

My daughter and I were discussing this question and we came to the conclusion that it’s basically impossible to protect yourself 100% in today’s world. There’s no way for us to see what’s around every corner or what life has in store for us next. I think 2020 taught us that lesson pretty well!

So, then what can we do? I think the next best defense is a good offense. That means to prepare, educate, and communicate. This is especially true in today’s online world.

While none of us have a crystal ball, we can prepare ourselves for unforeseen circumstances by educating ourselves and openly communicating with those around us.

Take, for example, a project at work. You’re doing everything right to keep the project on track, but all of a sudden, a vendor doesn’t come through and you’re derailed. You couldn’t fully protect yourself from this unforeseen circumstance but are you prepared? Are you educated about other options or vendors you could reach out to, or how you could get the project back on track? Do you have clear and open communication with your team so that you can work together to forge a path forward?

Life is a rollercoaster, that’s no secret! While I think we’d all like to be protected from the ups and downs, I don’t think it’s realistic. So instead, lets prepare by educating and communicating!
