Sacrifice What You Want Now for What You Want Most

While watching an inspiring video posted by Tim Tebow, he changed my thinking about long term goals.

We all have them - the thing we want to accomplish most. I want to lose weight, I want to learn a new language, I want to read a book a month. These are all goals that cannot be accomplished right now. They take time, commitment, and sacrifice.

What I was sacrificing always seemed imaginary to me. Something nonspecific like, if I watch one less show I will have an hour more to read. It never meant much more than that. I never thought of the fact that in every moment there is something that I want to do right then, like watch TV, and rarely does what I want right now help me accomplish what I want most of all.

This got me thinking.

The sacrifices we make to accomplish our long-term goals are the little things we want to do in every moment. Think about it.

When you say you are willing to sacrifice to accomplish your long-term goals, are you willing to sacrifice those little moments when you want what is comfortable or easy? When we decide to take on long-term goals, we know they will be big accomplishments to be proud of. When we think of them, we are inspired and motivated. But what happens after we set our goals?

If your goal is to run a 5k and it’s Thursday night and you are tired and want to watch TV, are you willing to sacrifice what you want in that moment in order to accomplish your long-term goal? In order to better ourselves that is the question we must all ask.

The best thing about it is, even if we do what we want in one moment, there are many moments in every day. Take the stairs, skip dessert, get up early, all these moments are in your future. The next time you reach for the elevator button, think about the sacrifice you are willing to make when your will is strong and give up what you want in that moment, for what you want most!
