The Family You Choose

I recently heard a country song that stopped me in my tracks. It is called “My Boy” by Elvie Shane. Most country songs have a story, and the story of this song is that the singer married a woman with a son. That stepchild became true family to the singer and he loves the boy like his own flesh and blood.
Here’s a line from the song:
Yeah, he's my son and that's my choice
He ain't my blood, but he's my, he's my boy.
The song struck me for two reasons.
I have known stepparents that became real parents to their stepchildren. It is a gift to the world to step into a parenting role and take that role seriously. Parents separate for many reasons and raising another person’s child is a labor of love and is a difficult job. Some of the best parenting I have seen has been by stepparents.
Our family is not just people that share our bloodline. Some of the most important family can be the family that we choose.
I love my blood family. Like all families, we have our moments, but I do love them and know they love me. We will always be there for each other.
I also have a set of friends that are the family that I choose, and they choose me. They are no less family to me than the people that share my grandparents.
These friends would drop everything at the hint that I need help, and I would do the same for them.
If you are blessed enough to have this type of friend, please take a minute to acknowledge them, thank them, and be thankful for them.
I also want to thank every person that has ever become a parent to a child when you did not have to. That may be the greatest gift you can give to a person.
Until next time…we are Advoco, make every minute count.
