Training When It's Raining

Disclaimer about me: I have failed to live up to this standard many times. But the times when I have been able to do it, it has been beneficial in more ways than one.
For those of you that have played sports, ran a race, wanted to go on a walk with a friend, or planned to do something outdoors, has it ever rained at the time of your scheduled event? It has for me. I have had all types of outside interference: snow, rain, freezing temperatures, searing temperatures, viruses, you name it.
These interruptions are called life, and what I would like to propose to you is to keep your training schedule no matter what the weather. If you only do your training under perfect conditions, how can you be at your best when your event occurs during poor conditions?
Training when it’s raining is a fun bumper sticker slogan, and I think the meaning behind it better prepares you for the unknown. And what’s more – it isn’t just about physical training. This theory can be applied to any practice you are trying to implement in your life. Conditions will never be perfect, but you need to get out there and do it!
Why would I avoid running when it is raining? If it rains the day of my race, am I going to skip it? No. So why would I not take the opportunity to train in subpar conditions? It might be better for me than training under ideal conditions.
So, take this advice with a grain of salt, but think about it the next time you plan to train and the weather does not agree. Training when it’s raining may be better for you in the long run!
