You're Not Carrying a Heart Down the Runway

I was talking with my family and we were discussing our jobs and how stressful they can sometimes be. While we were talking, my brother said something that really stuck with me. He said, “At the end of the day, you’re not carrying a heart down a runway.”
I thought this was a very unique way to get a better perspective of the situation you’re in – especially if you’re feeling stressed.
We’ve all seen those videos – a helicopter lands on top of a hospital and we wait with bated breath to see the medical team jump out to rush the cooler with what we know to be a vital organ to a waiting recipient. In that moment, the person carrying the cooler is quite literally carrying a heart (or other organ) down a runway. They’ve got someone’s life in their hands. Talk about pressure!
Whether it’s your day-to-day life or your work life; when tensions are getting high and you’re feeling stressed, it’s easy to let feelings of impatience or frustration consume you. Those feelings can affect how you talk to people, how you think, how you respond to the situation, and so much more.
But at the end of the day, is the situation really life and death? Is it really that complicated or that big of a deal? I would guess that if you took the time to step back from the situation, you’d see it really isn’t a cause for stress.
I’m not saying go through life or work with indifference, but sometimes it’s important to take a deep breath, step back, and realize you’re not carrying a heart down a runway.
